So, in our pantry we have had this guava paste that no one knew what to do with. I decided to finally use it and make something delicious with it. I absolutely love guava (if you’ve never tried it go to your local grocery store and head over to the international section, they will have some or at least they should).
The guava pastries that you can buy in most places in South Florida are absolutely delicious. I am currently making a list of all the places and food that I need to share with Jacob when we visit South Florida. He has yet to visit and he’s dying to. I am always talking about Florida and all the amazing places and food that it has to offer, I can not wait to go back. If you have a Publix nearby, sometimes they sell guava pastries. Most things at Publix are amazing, for example, their bakery is absolutely heavenly.
I figured anything I make with this guava paste will be delicious regardless and boy was I right! I looked up how to make guava bars and I came across the easiest recipe ever. There are tons of recipes on how to make these, they’re all a little different but for something quick and amazing this recipe is gold. In all honesty, I’m not that great of a baker but it is such a confidence booster when you make something delicious like this. Hands down the best thing I’ve ever made.
Since you can switch up the recipe a little, it is vegan friendly. I used Smart Balance instead of dairy butter. You can always play with the recipe some more and add in different things such as nuts or various spices.
Guava is native to Central America, Mexico, parts of South America and the Caribbean. There are tons of candies, juices and desserts made out of the fruit. Guava is also popular in Asia, you can find them being sold as snacks on the street.
Guava is said to have tons of health benefits that I have never heard of! According to Organic Facts,
“This popular fruit is a powerhouse of nutrients. As per USDA National Nutrient Database, guava is a good source of energy, dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals. The guava fruit contains vitamin C, A, E, B-vitamins, as well as potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, sodium, and zinc.”.
I think everyone knows by now that oatmeal is good for you but I just want to go over it again because it is one of the healthiest grains out there!
According to Healthline, “Oats are loaded with important vitamins, minerals and antioxidant plant compounds. Half a cup (78 grams) of dry oats contains (5):
- Manganese: 191% of the RDI
- Phosphorus: 41% of the RDI
- Magnesium: 34% of the RDI
- Copper: 24% of the RDI
- Iron: 20% of the RDI
- Zinc: 20% of the RDI
- Folate: 11% of the RDI
- Vitamin B1 (thiamin): 39% of the RDI
- Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid): 10% of the RDI
- Smaller amounts of calcium, potassium, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) and vitamin B3 (niacin)
Oats are among the most nutrient dense foods that you can eat.
I actually haven’t had oatmeal in such a long time (I’m not proud of it). When I did eat oatmeal, I would add almond milk, cinnamon, sugar and bananas into it. Don’t worry, I will definitely start eating oatmeal again…one day. For now, I’ll eat my oats like this.
The Recipe for oatmeal guava crumble bars
- 2 cups of flour (I use unbleached, it is said to be a little tougher (do not expect super softness from unbleached flour) and doesn’t look as nice as bleached flour but it is exposed to less chemicals)
- 2 cup of light brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon of salt
- 2 cups of quick oats
- 1 cup of softened butter (I used smart balance)
- 1 tablespoon of coconut oil
- 14 ounces of guava paste
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees
- Mix all your ingredients, except for the guava paste, together.
- Line your pan with butter or coconut oil
- Pack in half of your mixture into the pan, I used my hand to pack it in.
- In a bowl, put your guava and coconut oil and microwave this in increments of 30 seconds. (This is just to get it smoother and easier to put on top of the oatmeal mixture).
- Once all your guava is in the pan, add on top your remaining oatmeal mixture, (pack this in as well).
- Place your oatmeal bars in the oven and let them cook for 30-40 minutes.
- Once done, set aside to cool down, (roughly another 20 minutes) then cut into them.
These are amazing with vanilla ice cream, which is exactly what I did! I highly suggest eating it with either vanilla bean ice cream, dairy or non-dairy. It’s the cherry on top to this amazing dessert. I could literally eat this whole dessert by myself and that is extremely dangerous!
