Must have items!

Over the past several weeks, I have fell in love with a few products:

  •  Coconut Oil
  •  Lemon
  •  Apple Cider Vinegar
  •  Baking Soda
  •  Indian Healing Clay
  •  Ezekiel Bread

Coconut Oil:

Coconut oil is literally like manna from heaven. This product is probably my absolute favorite. I use it to:

  •  Moisturize my hair and my dogs fur
  •  Oil pulling
  •  Cook with
  •  Moisturize my skin

I haven’t been oil pulling for very long but despite the weird feeling it gives me I have been trying to stick it out and continue. I take a tablespoon of coconut oil and swish it around my mouth for about 20 minutes and then spit it out into the garbage. After I brush my teeth like normal. I have been doing this morning and night for about a week and it feels great. My teeth and mouth feel a lot cleaner. I’m going to continue doing this so I’ll let you guys know what happens.

Oil pulling is said to whiten your teeth, eliminate bad breath and prevent diseases in your gums. It is also said to benefits things other than your mouth such as, reduce congestion, relieve headaches, reduce redness in joints and helps to promote better sleep patterns.

I do not know how true all this information is but it’s kind of interesting.

Everything coconut is pretty much good for you, such as coconut sugar. It’s a lot healthier than regular sugar and can be used just the same!

Lemon:

Second to coconut oil, lemon is like manna from heavens cousin. I use lemon for various things. I drink warm water throughout the day and I put a little lemon juice in the water. (Also warm water with lemon juice and cayenne pepper) I clean my face probably around 3 days a week with lemon and honey. I have been eating watermelon a lot lately and I put lemon juice on the watermelon chunks and let me tell you! It is amazing, I would have never guessed. You must try it.

Benefits:

Lemon with warm water helps to detox the body

Helps in digestion

Prevents acne and wrinkles

Maintains body pH levels

Apple cider vinegar:

This vinegar is a little sweeter than your average white vinegar. I use this vinegar to clean my face as well. I have heard that it is good to drink a teaspoon of this vinegar once a day. I have not tried doing this but I think it would be beneficial. I use this vinegar for salad dressing as well. I have completely stopped using salad dressings such as Italian, and Ranch. And I use apple cider vinegar, extra virgin olive oil and salt and pepper. Seriously it is so much better than those dressings that completely mask the flavors of the vegetables.

I also use this vinegar with two other items on my list!

Benefits:

Lowers blood sugar levels

Help with weight loss

Help with sore throats (Gargle the vinegar with warm water)

And gives you an energy boost!

Baking Soda:

Baking soda doesn’t just have to be for baking. I use this item with my apple cider vinegar and use it for shampoo and conditioner. I know that might sound a little weird but it is actually refreshing. (I got this from a coworker, thanks Jason <3)

So I get two cups and I just put a little bit of vinegar in one and a little bit of the baking soda in another and take it with me to the shower. When I’m ready to wash my hair I take the baking soda cup and fill it half way with water. and then I pour it all over my hair focusing primarily on my scalp. Then I massage my scalp. After a little while I rise that out of my hair with cold water. Then I do the same with the vinegar. You have to make sure you rinse your hair out good though so you don’t end up smelling like vinegar the whole day. But it makes my hair feel smoother and cleaner since it doesn’t have all the chemicals that regular shampoo and conditioner has.

Keep in mind this is not supposed to be used everyday. Since overusing this might strip your hair of its natural oils. I only use it when my hair needs some revitalization and a break from all kinds of products. And with certain hair types it might leave your hair dry. That’s why I focus on my scalp when I’m washing with these items. After I clean my hair with this I moisturize with coconut oil so my hair isn’t so dry.

Baking soda is also great for brushing your teeth. A while ago I tried making my own toothpaste, I kind of failed but I still use it because its so simple to make.

It is just coconut oil, mint essential oil and baking soda.

You can use baking soda for insect bites as well and as a natural deodorant ( my next project).

Indian Healing clay:

This God-given product that you can get from whole foods has done wonders for my face.

I try to use it once a week or just whenever my face needs it.

I take about a tablespoon of the product and add it with apple cider vinegar. Then I spread it all over my face and wait about 20 minutes for it to dry. You can feel your skin pulsate and tighten. I rinse it off with cold water and it leaves my face red (which lasts for about 15 minutes) but it is like a new face, so fresh and clean.

This product is made of bentonite clay which is referred to as Aztec magic.

This clay helps to get your cells more oxygen and be able to breathe.

It relieves digestion problems.

Improves the health of teeth and mouth

It can also be used as an alternative to baby powder!

Ezekiel bread:

Aka the Bible bread. I love bread, I will eat bread all day and night and that’s kind of a problem for me. Because of my love for bread I have been trying alternatives, such as wraps made from rice and things of that nature but this Ezekiel bread is perfect. To be honest it took me a little to get used to this bread. It is not like other bread. They do not have flour, it is organic, it is made out of 6 different grains and legumes and it tastes great. I’ll typically eat the bread like toast with coconut oil on it. It’s amazing. They have different flavors but my favorite is the sprouted grain. Give this bread a chance and you’ll love it too.

These items are not that hard to get and have multiple uses so it saves money and time!

Revitalization

I have come back to revitalize my blog! I have left my blog for a long time and I absolutely regret it. Despite my absence I have continued on my journey of living healthy. Since around April I have stopped eating meat, mind you I still eat eggs and other animal products. I am trying to get rid of them as well, but its a little tougher than I expected. EVERYTHING HAS ANIMAL PRODUCTS! (At least everything I love eating). I do not drink milk, besides coconut and almond milk. I never really liked milk that much, I would drink it with cereal and something chocolaty but that’s it. So getting rid of it wasn’t that hard for me. I have switched from using dairy butter to using Smart Balance. I must admit Smart Balance isn’t the healthiest choice. The healthiest is using mashed avocado or coconut oil, which I do use and I must admit is absolutely delicious. But I haven’t tried using avocado to substitute butter in baking (which I should) so I use Smart Balance instead. It is dairy free and also non-gmo! Eggs is one thing that I just cannot give up. I love eggs. Scrambled, hard boil, sunny side up, they are all so good! I’m not sure if I’m going to try to give that up because I believe that everyone’s body is different and what my body needs is different from what your body might need. Despite my saying that I’ve given up milk and butter, I do love baked goods and ice cream and I do not hesitate to eat them.

On another note:

I have also decided to dedicate more of my blog posts to beauty. How to not only be healthy, natural and organic with what you eat but also with what you put on your body. Shampoos, lotions, toothpaste and etc, all contain chemicals that aren’t exactly healthy for you so look forward to more posts on how to get rid of those chemicals. For example, I have started scrubbing my face with honey and lemon. It makes my face so much smoother and it feels fresh. I have recently started doing this so I’ll keep you posted on how that goes for me.

PCOS and how I’m dealing with it

About a year ago I went to a simple gynecologist visit and I was informed that I had a cyst , caused from Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. I kind of felt like something was wrong with me in that area (your body will let you know when something is off, you just have to listen to it) I wasn’t surprised when she told me this news but I was frightened. She immediately recommended that I get on birth control, I declined her offer. I have heard tons of stories about how birth control changes your body and it just didn’t sound appealing to me.

Quick little background story about me:

When I was in kindergarten, (I remember this specifically) it was the day after Halloween in the morning and my older brothers friend came over with his candy and we all started eating the candy. Just my luck I got a candy similar to a jaw breaker stuck in my throat! I was terrified, my brother woke up my parents and they helped me get it out of my throat. But I am absolutely convinced that this event is the reason why it is very difficult for me to swallow pills. Along with this difficulty, I don’t like taking medicine when I’m sick, I’d rather my body heal itself.

So taking birth control pills did not sound appealing to me at all. After I finished with the doctors, I looked up ways to get rid of PCOS naturally and the causes of this syndrome.

What I found:

Many doctors say that there isn’t one specific reason as to why someone would have PCOS but there are some things that might cause it.

  • Genetics play a very important role in this, my mother has PCOS and she also decided not to take birth control so she is still living with the pain the cysts causes.
  •  Imbalance of hormones
  •  Having extra insulin that stimulates the body to produce more testosterone

You may have PCOS if:

  • Like me your period is irregular. I only get my period about once every 3 months, and this has been since I got my period, so for about 6 years. If on your period you have extreme pain, if your period lasts for an abnormal amount of days (more or less than 7 days). Mine lasts for about 5 days and the first two days are the worst. I have so much pain I literally feel like throwing up. There are tons other symptoms you don’t necessarily have to have these symptoms, these were just the ones I have. You must learn to listen to your body.

Also if you’re having trouble conceiving, obviously that’s a red flag and something is wrong but there may be a possibility that you have PCOS. I’m not trying to conceive just yet, I’m not at that stage in life but I have always  had a fear that I may not be able to conceive. And knowing that I have this problem triggers more fear that when the time comes it’ll be difficult for me. But this is just motivation for me to heal my body so I won’t have this problem any longer.

My dad has been trying to live and eat better as well and he sent me a book that he bought from Jillian Michaels called Master Your Metabolism. The book spends about 2 pages talking about PCOS, the causes and what needs to be done to get rid of it. Jillian talks about how PCOS is one of the most common hormonal problems for women in the United States (So I know I’m not alone on this).

Jillian Michaels lists some things to do to help your PCOS:

  •  Monitor your blood sugar
  •  Lose 10 percent of your weight, this is said to help make your menstrual cycle regular
  •  Quit smoking
  • Stick to organic dairy

Along with reading up on Jillian Michaels, I also e-mailed my favorite blogger, Organic Olivia. I told her everything about my situation she replied with saying that birth control is never the answer and that cysts are pockets of parasites. In order to get rid of PCOS you have to cleanse your body of parasites, eat 100% organic, no soy, eat plant based nutrient rich foods, eat grass fed organ meats and wild fish.

What I have been doing:

Eating 100% organic is kind of hard for me, I’m not going to lie. I love food and all kinds of it. Regardless of this I have been doing the parasite cleanse. When I first found out that I had cysts, my doctor asked why I went to visit her and why I decided to get an ultrasound and I told her that I just wanted to know what was happening with my body. She proceeded to tell me that I had a cyst but I also had fluid indicating that a cyst had previously erupted. Now, the eruption of a cyst is very painful, so I’ve heard, so I didn’t even know that this happened to me. And it happened right after I finished my parasite cleanse. So I’m convinced that these are pockets of parasites (what else would explain the eruption but no pain?) So that is why I’m taking the parasite cleanse again. Whenever I do the parasite cleanse I feel renewed and full of energy. I highly recommend everyone to do this, even if you don’t have PCOS and even if you aren’t a woman. It is necessary in life.

Along with this I have been TRYING to eat organic, trying to limit my meat and dairy intake because both of these contain lots of chemicals and hormones, which is my main problem, my hormone imbalance. So if I do consume meat and dairy I’m trying for it to only be organic and from a grass fed animal. And because I love food so much I have been trying to make up a bunch of recipes and teach myself how to cook healthier, that’s the main reason for this blog. To help myself become better and to tell others about my journey, so in the end we both see my results and hopefully I can teach other people what I know.

Also exercising is very important. I’m lazy but I have been going outside and exercising for the past couple of weeks. It’s good when you have a goal, like trying to get the perfect spring break body, which is mine (haha) but I’m not going to stop at spring break, I’m just going to continue to make small goals and try to accomplish them.

Now for my hormone imbalance, I’m taking DIM which is a vegetable extract that comes from Kale and broccoli that helps to balance estrogen levels.

Also very important, get rid of plastic containers, plastic bottles, tuber ware and such items that you hold your food in. You need containers that are BPA free. So I bought a new glass water bottle, which I’m in love with, and glass food containers for my lunch and snacks.

I’m not saying that I’m free from my PCOS, I still have to go back and get another ultrasound but hopefully what I’ve been doing has been helping me get rid of this syndrome.

Seven days into the New Year

Just like everyone else, I made my New Years resolution (Hopefully I can keep them) and they are as follows:

  •  Treat my body well
  •  Read more
  •  And more than anything just be happy

These are simple resolutions but it’s so easy to get distracted and caught up in life. I made it a habit of falling asleep while watching Netflix (I would binge watch shows on top of shows) but now I’m trying to get back into reading. So I went to the library and checked out Coming Up for Air by George Orwell and Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis. I want to limit how much I use electronics and watch tv, I think it’s kind of ridiculous how I’m so attached to my phone and Ipad.

I am also keeping track of what I’ve been eating, recently my older brother and his family visited for the holidays and my sister in law told me how she journals what she eats and it has worked for her in her efforts to eat better. I’ve always wanted to do this and she gave me the motivation I needed to actually do it. (Thanks Tabitha! <3) So I bought a cute little planner that I am absolutely in love with, I’ve only been doing journaling what I eat for three days but I’m so excited and it does help me a lot! I don’t want to eat like a bunch of gross food and write it down, it’s a little embarrassing to read back on that, so that’s kind of my motivation to not eat fattening foods.

Along with journaling, I’ve started my parasite cleanse again because in the past couple of months with all the holidays and food I wasn’t paying any mind as to what I was eating. Consequently, I now feel horrible, like in my gut, I feel gross. I’m tired all the time and extremely lazy, I hate feeling this way. So I’m taking my parasite cleanse to get rid of all the bugs that made their way into my body.

In 2014 I did a lot of things to make others happy while I’m not happy, not necessarily sad but just not happy. And I’m trying to work on that. It’s only been 7 days into the new year but I have been happy this whole time, genuinely happy. It is an incredibly nice feeling, hopefully it’ll last.
