A couple of years ago I went on a little vacation to Los Angeles, California. Let me tell you guys, I was terrified to get on the plane. I’m going to share what I did to overcome my fear and most importantly to tell you that you are not alone in your fear. Hopefully after reading this you’ll be able to conquer your fear too .

Now, let me give you guys a little back story. I have been flown on a plane at least twice a year ever since I could remember. Every summer I would always go visit my dad and his side of the family and those plane rides were at most 2 & 1/2 hours.

Well, guess what!?

I survived those rides and I can’t remember ever being afraid. So WHY out of no where has this fear possessed me?! Quite frankly, I still don’t know the answer to this question.

This fear is so embarrassing for me, not only do I think that I’m way too old to feel like this. It feels like I have no control of what I’m thinking or feeling.

Here are the tips that I use to survive a plane ride

1. Eat Light

Now, I don’t know about you guys but when I’m nervous my body tends to shake, I’ll start sweating and I will probably throw up (too much info, I know). But seriously on the plane ride I packed tons of snacks like trail mix, fruit and candied ginger. Don’t eat anything too heavy because if you’re like me, and do end up throwing up you don’t want it to be extremely gross.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say don’t eat anything at all, but eat something you’re familiar with. I have heard of taking a shot to calm down, I have yet to try this out just because I don’t think it would work for me, but it may work for you!

When the flight attendants come around with drinks, I ask for a cup of ice so I can crunch on that throughout the flight. I don’t really know why but that helps me calm down.

2. Stay Occupied

If my mind starts wandering mid flight I start freaking out. For example, I can’t sleep on a flight because that moment when you’re waking up and starting to realize where you are is absolutely terrifying for me. I did think about taking a Tylenol PM to knock me out but I was too afraid. I’m noticing that little things scare me.
So to stay occupied I bought two magazines.
****REMEMBER buy magazines outside of the airport because WOW those prices are steep***
I had my snacks, crunching on my trail mix and ice kept me occupied and watching the movies on flight helps so much.

3. Be Friendly

This is honestly the best tip I can give. I’m a friendly person in general but I try to be extra nice to the people I’m sitting next to. On my recent flights I told the people next to me how nervous I was and they reassured me that everything was going to be okay and we engaged in some small talk that really calmed me down.

While traveling you come across some really cool people, so, not only does this keep you occupied, you also meet new people.

4. Talk Yourself Up

This trip I talk to myself A LOT. I did this to reassure myself that everything was going to be alright.

For example, I said something along the lines of “You have all these great goals that you want to accomplish and you’re going to let a little fear bring you down?” And also “little kids fly on planes all the time, am I really going to let a kid be braver than me?”
I’m crazy, I know. But it really does help.
Also I pray before the flight starts, this is a must for me. It puts my mind at ease a little.
I think something that is really important to realize that this fear isn’t a thing of mine, it’s simply something that happened in the past and it will not dictate what will happen in the future.
The mind is a powerful thing, conquering fear is just a matter of your mind.
Even if flying isn’t something you struggle with it’s important to know that you can conquer your fear and

  1. I’m pretty scared to fly as well! I’ve also flown since I was a baby, so this fear is really strange for me. But your tips are great! I will try them when I visit Mexico in 2 weeks.

  3. Like you, I used to be cool as a cucumber while flying. In the last 10 years something flipped in my brain and now I get really nervous.

My wife makes fun of me because I even nervous sweat on the backs of my hands. It’s intense.

I think the eating tip is really important. On my last flight I found myself using the restroom and it was the worst experience ever. It’s so small and cramped and you can hear the wind outside through the paper thin walls just waiting to suck you out.

I’d prefer to just take something and get knocked out, but I have 4 kids and I would win the “worst husband of the year” award if I abandoned my wife on the plane with our army of demons.
