So, I decided that I needed to make some amazing homemade bread, finally. I’m always trying to find new things to make that we usually buy from the store. I was reading some articles about how the bread that we’re used to isn’t actually real bread, and it’s so true! The bread that’s in the store is filled with preservatives so that it can last on shelves longer. There are basically no nutrients in it because of all the bleach that’s in it.

I love bread.

I’m quite positive that I will always love it and I’ll probably never be able to give it up. But then I married my husband…. He doesn’t eat that much bread. We try our best to eat healthy and limit how much bread we eat. We do eat sourdough bread and every once in a while, we’ll indulge in some baguettes.

Well, I made some of my own bread. My favorite bread used to be Ezekiel Bread. It’s a great bread, it’s made out of wheat, barley, lentils, spelt and more. I stopped buying it because lets face it, it’s expensive. I really do not want to spend 5-7 dollars on bread all the time. So now, we just stick to sourdough.

****Even though I’m always cooking, I’m not that great of a cook. Most of the things I make I only eat because no one else likes it and I’m pretty much experimenting with different things. But this bread was AMAZING. ****

It’s basically “Italian” bread because of the herbs I used to crust it, but you can skip this part and only make the bread or crust it with anything else (i.e. cinnamon sugar and so on).

Ingredients for your homemade bread:

  • 2 cups of bread flour
  • 4 cups of All-purpose flour (I used unbleached flour)
  • 1 tablespoon of salt
  • 3 cups of warm water (I microwaved the water until it reached 110 degrees)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon of instant yeast

** For the crust**

I basically eyeballed it; it really depends on what you like. For example, I love garlic so I used a little more of that. Do it how you like it! But roughly I used these measurements.

  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of minced garlic

I used this to both coat the bread and use as a dipping sauce.

  1. Dissolve your salt into the warm water. Once it’s dissolved, into your mixing bowl, add your yeast, bread flour and 2 cups of your all-purpose flour.
  2. Once mixed together, slowly add in the rest of your flour, about ½ cup at a time.
  3. Coat your counter with flour and dump out your bread mixture onto the counter.
  4. Knead the bread for about 5 minutes.
  5. Oil the pot that you’re going to make your bread in. Place your bread into the pot and coat the bread in oil.
  6. Cover your pot in plastic wrap and place a dish towel on top of that.
  7. Place into the pantry/cabinet for an hour to rise.
  8. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
  9. Coat your bread with your oil & herb mixture.
  10. Cook in over for 30 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.
  11. Once cooked, coat the bread with more of your oil & herb mixture and it’s done.

This bread is so good. I was so proud of myself with this one. It is definitely one of the best things that I’ve ever made. This recipe isn’t hard, it just takes some time.

I think it’s really good for people to know how to make such simple things such as bread. Get back to the basics and make your own things, or at least know how to make it. It was 100% better than store bought bread. Seriously, you have to try out this recipe for homemade bread yourself!

If you tweak the recipe and do something different let me know! I’d love to hear about it.
