Home grown, Atlanta: A Review

Today was the first day that my mother and I explored Atlanta. It was interesting and quite confusing, but I loved it, nonetheless. My absolute favorite part was the restaurant that we stumbled upon, Home grown. Knowing that I was going to go to Atlanta today, last night I went on Yelp and looked at tons of restaurants that have authentic southern food (or at least claim they do).

So, this morning I was ready. I knew of a couple of places that I wanted to try, unfortunately we didn’t try any of the restaurants that I researched. Driving around Atlanta and getting our errands done was exhausting and honestly, I was very frustrated. There was some traffic and it’s a little annoying driving around an unfamiliar big city because you must read every sign, just in case. So we started driving back home and my mother was like “Wait, I want to eat something before the drive back home”. So I got off of the highway and looked for something on Yelp that was close by and I came across this gem.

About Home grown

Home grown is owned by Lisa Spooner and Kevin Clark. Spooner is a former teacher and Clark is a renowned fine dining chef. Home grown is located in East Atlanta and they offer amazing breakfast and lunch every day. They have a beautiful garden that is located behind the restaurant, it is organic and supplies the restaurant with some of its produce. They grow tomatoes, cabbage, lettuce and lots of herbs. Sounds amazing, right?

French toast sandwich made with spinach, bacon, tomato in French toast with a side.

Shrimp po’boy

BBQ shrimp & cheese grits

Their hours: Monday-Friday 7am – 3pm, Saturday & Sunday 7am – 2pm

Our Experience at Home grown, Atlanta

To start off, every employee was extremely helpful. For me, customer service is key. Even if a place wasn’t that great, I will return if they had amazing service.

We ordered fried green tomatoes, which I have never had. I was pretty excited to try them. In all honesty, I probably won’t order them again. They were just okay. I’m quite positive it’s because maybe I just don’t like green tomatoes. They were good but I didn’t really care for them. I don’t know what’s the big deal about them, maybe you have to grow up eating them to like them.

I ordered the shrimp Po’boy with jalapeno coleslaw and it came with 2 cornbread muffins. The sandwich itself was good, the shrimp was fresh and delicious, which is always a plus. Living inland I’m always so suspicious of ordering seafood and I hardly ever do. But I figured that it’s Atlanta and it would have to be good.

The jalapeno coleslaw was amazing. I don’t like sweet coleslaw, for some reason it’s just blah. So, this coleslaw was great. It had little slivers of jalapenos, so it had the perfect amount of heat. Even those that don’t enjoy spicy food will enjoy this.

Now for the cornbread, this item I didn’t really care for. It was hard and I honestly didn’t even eat it. I brought it home to give to my dog. I know, that sounds bad but I’m quite positive that was just today’s batch. It must be good every other day, everything else was really good. I won’t hold the blah cornbread against them.

My mother ordered a fried chicken sandwich with a side of sweet potatoes. I didn’t try her sandwich, but she said she loved it, so I’ll take her word for it. She is extremely picky! If I take her to a place or restaurant she will definitely point out everything that she hates about it, which of course is extremely annoying.

I tried her sweet potatoes and they were hands down probably the best sweet potatoes I’ve ever had. It is obvious that they make all (or at least most) of their food fresh.

After we ate, we were walking back to the car and we noticed that out back they have a little garden. Honestly, their garden could be way better, but I appreciate their efforts and I think it’s wonderful. They have peppers, rosemary, basil, and even a pear tree! I am so happy that I came across this place and actually liked it.

I love restaurants that keep a comfy/laid back environment but make amazing food. Whenever you’re visiting Atlanta a stop at Home Grown, Atlanta is a must.

Now, Jacob and I are on the hunt for amazing restaurants like this one around Atlanta. We love visiting this city, I have definitely fallen in love with this place. They have amazing parks, the best grocery stores, tons of fun stores and the best food. I can’t wait to share with you all where we’re going next!
