Yes, I finally did it! I don’t know why but I have always wanted to make poptarts (I don’t even like the store bought ones that much!) Well, anyway, I finally made them and they turned out amazing.

This recipe will make 9+ poptarts, depending on how big or small you make them. It took AT MOST 1 hour. Also, you can add any filling you want! The next flavor I’m going to make is guava!

For the pastry crust:

  • 2 cups of all purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 cup of unsalted butter, cubed and cold
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tablespoons of milk (I used an almond/coconut milk mix)

For brown sugar mixture:

  • 1/2 cup of light brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 4 teaspoons of all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt

Brown sugar poptarts icing:

  • 3/4 cup of powdered sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon milk (again, I used almond/coconut milk mixture)
  • 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla

For raspberry filling:

  • raspberry jam
  • zest of 1 lemon

Raspberry poptarts icing:

  • 3/4 cup of powered sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon milk (again, I used almond/coconut milk mixture)
  • 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • zest of 1 lemon

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees

  1. Make your pastry crust! In your bowl whisk together your flour, salt and sugar. We used a pastry blender to add in the butter to this mixture, you can use a fork if you do not have one. Or you can click
(pastry blender) and order one from Amazon.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together the egg and milk and then add this to your flour mixture. Knead this mixture on your countertop with extra flour until the dough is completely mixed.
  3. Roll out your dough (wooden rolling pin) into two rectangles, we cut our rectangles to be 4 inches high and 3 1/2 inches wide, but of course you can make them whatever size you want.
  4. Line your baking sheets with parchment paper (we had two sheets because I was afraid I would mix the two flavors up!). Transfer half of your rectangular dough to your sheets.
  5. Use a pastry brush, (if you don’t have one click pastry brush to order one from Amazon) to brush an egg wash mixture (1 egg & 1 tablespoon of milk) over your rectangles.
  6. Add a tablespoon of mixture to the middle of each rectangle on your baking sheet. Make sure you avoid the corners because the mixture will ooze out when cooking!
  7. Next take your remaining rectangles and cover the ones with the mixture, using a fork pinch together your two rectangles.
  8. Use extra egg wash to brush the top of the poptarts so they’re flaky and have a nice crust.
  9. POP THEM INTO THE OVEN! It’ll take roughly 20 minutes for them to get golden brown and cooked all the way.
  10. While the poptarts are cooking make your icings. For this, literally all you have to do is mixed the ingredients together in a bowl.
  11. Once the poptarts are done and slightly cooled down add your icing!
  12. And YOU’RE DONE!

Let me know if you end up trying it or if you have any other fun recipes!
